ShareSoc – the Share(ing) Society for the Private Investor
I can’t say hand on heart if it’s true, but Buddah supposedly once said “There is no wealth like knowledge, and no poverty like ignorance“. Billionaire investor and philanthropist Charlie Munger equally once said “The best thing a human being can do is help another human being know more“.
The point being?
I always think the world is a better place for sharing knowledge; personally it gives me great satisfaction and I am sure others feel the same. Also, as a private investor you may at times think your voice isn’t heard or the odds are stacked against you in the jungle of the stock market.
This leads me to ShareSoc.
The ShareSoc Mission
Its website states:
“ShareSoc is a not-for-profit organisation, created by investors for investors. Our aims are to help improve your investment experience and to represent your interests wherever this is needed. We do this by providing information and education, by promoting your rights to companies and by seeking to influence government and regulatory policy.”
Often such mission statements can be a little cliché or lack tangible substance. My experience of ShareSoc is that they deliver their mission statement in spades.
Similar to the ethos of Cube Investments, ShareSoc is run by investors for investors; the Directors all having a strong track record in the field of investing and some of whom readers may have already met at a ShareSoc event, investor forum/seminar, Mello event, AGM or one of many other such events that occur on a regular basis usefully filling each of our diaries.
Membership is free at ‘Associate’ level but full membership is only £45/annum and brings with it a myriad of benefits including:
- A comprehensive monthly newsletter
- Free entry to ShareSoc company growth seminars
- Discounts on various investor services e.g. Stockopedia and Research Tree
- Free entry to ShareSoc Suppers (single company events)
- Access to the ShareSoc company AGM report library packed full of AGM reports from other investors.
This aside, the ShareSoc team works tirelessly running campaigns for the benefit of private investors (a recent high profile and very successful campaign being in response to the Financial Conduct Authority declaring Beaufort Securities insolvent on the 2nd March 2018).
Other more general campaigns pertain to securing guaranteed rights for shareholders with one aim being to ensure the end investor is identified on the company register.
They also strongly promote education by means of an Investor Academy as well as providing educational videos, recommended reading lists and information on numerous investing topics; a veritable goldmine of investing nuggets.
I am a proud member of ShareSoc and feel privileged to have access to all the resources they share with the private investor community.
If knowledge is enriching, I surmise that joining ShareSoc could be one of the best investments you’ve ever made!
